A Boolean search is a search option available to you on most job board sites like Monster and Career Builder. It is also used in a broader fashion on spider search engines like Google or Bing. It is a valuable time saving tool to use in your internet job hunting.

Life is too short. Let the computer do what it does best which is doing searches fast, repetitively and across the whole internet. You can best use your time to think and execute the pursuit of getting job interviews.

Learn how to do a Boolean search for job boards:

A Boolean search starts by putting qualifying keywords in the engines’ “search” field:

Quotation marks at the beginning and end of two words like “marketing management” will find job descriptions with these words together.

Placing an “and” between two search keyword will find only jobs that contain both sets of search criteria. Adding more “and” directs the computer to meet all the criteria before giving you a list of jobs.

If the search results are not getting you enough jobs to look at, reduce the number of “and,” or change some of the keywords and do the search over again.

For more assistance on how to create a Boolean search, go to www.broadlook.com/eyss and click on “search string – flash recording”

For the CareerBuilder job board (www.careerbuilder.com) this means go to the advanced search tab and put your Boolean search in the “Keywords” field. Then click the “use” box and highlight “All these words” search method. The CareerBuilder job board contains job openings that companies pay CareerBuilder to advertise. Usually most of these jobs are different from what are listed on Monster for jobs. Companies normally only list jobs on one major board because of cost.

When using the Monster job board (www.monster.com) put your Boolean search words in the “Enter keyword” box. You do not need to enter a location, if you would like to see all the positions across the USA. The Monster job board contains job openings that companies pay Monster to list.

Example # 1: If your background is marketing management of electrical components for computers, involving printed circuit board contract manufacturers, and you want to target jobs involving your past experience. A possible Boolean search on Monster or the CareerBuilder job site is: “marketing manager” and electronics and “contract manufacturing”

Spider (across the internet) search web sites

When doing a Google spider search (www.google.com) put your Boolean search criteria in the Google “search” box then click the “Google search” box or go to Advanced search. By filling in the boxes Google will build your Boolean search for you.

Quotation marks at the beginning and end of two words like “marketing management” will find job descriptions with these words together.

When using the “or” – be sure to capitalize the word OR. You can add as many company web sites as desired or as many job boards as desired. Note that company web sites will normally not select all the Boolean keywords when looking for job positions, usually they only select one keyword of your search.

When using the spider search site you do not need the “www.” in these searches of company or job board sites.

When doing a Bing spider search (www.bing.com) put your Boolean search criteria in the Bing “search” box then click the orange symbol at the end of the search box.

With one search on a spider search site like Bing or Google you can find target positions that fit what you want to do by probing many company web sites and/or many different job search sites at the same time. The search results will match your search criteria on job boards, but not exactly on company web sites.

An example will make it easier to understand broad spider searches. One search will find the type of job you want, at the companies you want to work for and/or scour the internet to see what job search boards have listed that meet your criteria.

Example # 2: Your background is marketing management of electrical components for computers, involving printed circuit board contract manufacturers and you want to target jobs involving your past experience using three different job boards and two companies such as IBM and GE (General Electric).

An example for the above situation – a Boolean search for a Google or the Bing spider site would look like: “marketing manager” and electronics and “contract manufacturing” site:indeed.com OR monster.com OR careerbuilder.com OR IBM.com OR GE.com

Note: I recommend that you print out this article prior to setting up a Boolean search to get the proper formatting of the search.

A great way to get an edge on your competition when trying to find a job and get an interview is to essentially set up your own back door entry into a company where you can be seen and chat with people at the company that may have open positions in an informal way.

The situation:
The candidate was networking with a contact of a small company over a beer. During the conversation the candidate found out that the company was thinking of hiring 5 people and had not advertised the positions. The contact suggested that the candidate send him a resume, which he then gave to the appropriate person. No inquires were made by the company to talk to the candidate.

A great action/plan:
The candidate took the bull by the horns by calling the company contact stating that “he was doing errands tomorrow in the city (or near his office), would it be possible to stop by briefly to see him to determine what the company was about?” The response was “Sure and bring along copies of your resume, just in case…” They set up a time.

The result:
During the informal visit the contact chatted with him, showed him around the offices and introduced him to some of the key people in the company. The candidate was ready to give his resume to anyone who talked about an “open position,” if it was requested, or if there was an appropriate opening in the conversation to hand him one.

Lesson learned:
To get an edge up on your competition, always try to follow up on your leads or contacts while they are still fresh. Try to keep the job search moving forward by being smarter and timelier than other candidates.

Now is the time to put extra effort in to that job search. Most candidates think that the Holidays are a slow time for companies. Actually, business may be slow, but hiring often is more feverous in November, December and January as compared to other times of the year.

Companies often are more active interviewing and hiring during these months for the following reasons:

They may have money in their manpower and travel budgets that has not been spent and they will lose it December 31, if not used.

Their new budgets open up in the first quarter and it takes time to make a good hire.

The companies are not very busy during the holidays; therefore, managers are willing to spend more time looking and interviewing candidates.

When other candidates are not very active, you should take advantage of these three months to set up interviews and prepare to hit the road running coming January 1st.

When should I reapply for a job opening in a company?

Situation:
An engineer had applied for a position at a rather large company. He received a phone call from the hiring manager about his job experiences after having forwarded his resume to the HR department. The phone interview did not result in any more conversations with the company.

Three months later a similar position or another position opened up at the same company. The engineer called the HR department to ask about whether he should reapply or would his previous paper work still be on record. HR said that there was no need to reapply. HR said that they would still have his paper work on file, they would do a keyword search of their database for applicable candidates, and if he qualified, they would put his paper work in with the other qualified candidates.

Answer:
The engineer should not bother to call the HR department and should reapply with an updated resume for the following reasons:

Different job openings could involve different hiring managers, different HR people and possibly a different hiring process.

It is easier for companies to gather new updated resumes of people instead of looking through old files or do database searches of old files that need to be updated.

Old resumes may have old contact information and you cannot be easily contacted.

Database search results depend on the person ability to set up searches, their ability to use search software and computers.

Older resumes may not make it into the new database when systems are changed.

The current resumes will not be the one in the database. Last jobs held may not be on the resume.

New application forms may be used now with different information required.

The company may have old references you provided them during the phone interview and application, and you now have better current references.

YOUR NEW RESUME SHOULD BE BETTER THAN YOUR PREVIOUS ONE:

Your new resume will be written to target the position open.

It will contain updated contact information and email address.

It will reflect your latest jobs.Your resume will be improved by reflecting a modern resume format. (See Chapter 5 in EBook It’s Your Job to Lose. See link at web site: www.yourjobtolose.com

It could show new acquired skills.

It should emphasis your last 10 years of work experience, or those relevant to the job opening.

Always reapply for new positions with a revised targeted resume and if required with a new application.
